When the funds are really trapped, use a local currency money market fund

In the long run, most trapped cash can be 'released', but there may be many months or years when it cannot. Obtaining any return on these funds can be difficult.
Most banks provide money market funds in the global currencies; few provide them in the 'difficult' currencies. HSBC is one of the leading banks in providing funds managed to local requirements which are only available to local domiciled entities. They currently provide these funds in nine countries, see Figure.
