Risks of 4IR technologies sometimes overlooked - survey

Not all organisations are concerned about the risks posed by emerging technologies and while many are already prepared, a surprising number are not and don't recognise the risks associated with robotics, artificial intelligence or blockchain. These are some of the conclusions from a risk report published by the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP). The 2018 Risk Survey Report highlights the following key findings:

  • About 50 per cent of US financial professionals have observed new risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI), distributed ledger technology/blockchain, and robotic process automation. The other half of the professionals surveyed said they have not observed new risks associated with these emerging technologies.
  • One-third of respondents said their organisation is unprepared for new risks arising from the implementation of new technology – but the majority of those are taking steps to rectify this and address potential risk.
  • 14 per cent said they are significantly prepared and 54 per cent said they are moderately prepared for new risks arising from new technologies.
  • Strategic and cybersecurity risks are the top concerns for the financial professionals surveyed and they are expected to remain the top two concerns until 2021.
