Use a smartphone to verify online purchases
by Kylene Casanova
A new solution is coming to verify online purchases more secure. SafePay Solutions, a Canadian authentication based company, has revealed plans to launch a new tool which uses a smartphone to verify online purchases. Consumer downloads the SafePay application (on iOS for now with Android, Windows Phone and BlackbBerry coming later in 2012) and introduces their billing address and the first and last six digits of all the credit cards they want to register with SafePay. When that customer or someone who obtains the user’s credit card number tries to make a purchase on a website that uses SafePay, the user will receive an in-app push notification which provides him with 60 seconds to approve or decline the sale.
Once the user’s address or credit card numbers are recognised, SafePay starts working. If the user declines a purchase through a push notification, the transaction is canceled. In case the user doesn’t deny a fraudulent charge in due time, the merchant processes it like any other transaction. But users can flag the transaction and report it afterwards to their bank or credit card company.
SafePay has revealed plans to roll out in fall 2012 a feature which will allow a user to set a default denial if they don’t respond to a push notification
